Shalom – Welcome to “Little Jerusalem”: Jewish life, yesterday and today!

Shalom – Welcome to “Little Jerusalem” – guided tour of Hamburg

In his speech at the 2021 ceremony marking 1,700 years of Jewish life in Germany, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said a sentence that has stayed with me: “Whether in philosophy, literature, painting and music, in science, medicine or business – Jews have helped write and shape our history and made our culture shine.”

As Hamburg grew in the 19th century, the Grindel quarter – today’s university district – blossomed into a hotspot of Jewish culture. More than 25,000 Jews lived here. One expression of this was the Bornplatz Synagogue, the largest and most beautiful synagogue in the city. After many political debates it is to be rebuilt and will shine in new splendour.

The focus of my tour is to discover Jewish life of yesterday and today. Sadly, in some places only memorial plaques remain to recall what once was.
Through stories and biographies I want to bring to life the cultural, intellectual and economic blessings that Jewish citizens bestowed on the Hanseatic city – far beyond their own lifetimes.
On my walk we meet the honorary citizen and theatre director Ida Ehre and Albert Ballin, director of Hapag, once the largest shipping company in the world. We get to know the great benefactor of the city, the banker Salomon Heine, and his nephew, the poet Heinrich Heine. And we visit the memorial to Rabbi Dr. Joseph Carlebach, a great scholar and benefactor.

How do artists counter forgetting? Among others, I introduce you to the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig and his “Stolpersteine” (stumbling stones) project.
Which customs and traditions define Jewish culture? These questions, too, will not go unanswered.

Shalom – I look forward to meeting you!
